The announcement this week that Facebook is down to just 4 users that actually enjoy using Facebook was not altogether surprising to me. But is ought to be a wake up call to the throngs of EdTech advocates enjoying a love fest over social media in higher education.
I learned of the news Facebook user satisfaction being in the tank was from the recent article in the Onion entitled Number Of Users Who Actually Enjoy Facebook Down To 4. The article cites what a very compelling and exhaustive study by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project into just how many people actually enjoy using Facebook.
Turns out, the study found the 950 million users of Facebook, despite using Facebook on a regular basis, receive no joy from using the social networking site.
Because I don’t want to take away from the original article or misrepresent this important research, I will simply encourage you to take a minute and read the story which includes shocking revelations as to why people can’t stand Facebook.
I wonder if they will be conducting a study on Twitter users next.
PS – I was not surprised that one of the four people that enjoy Facebook lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Completely tongue-in-cheek. If you are not familiar with the satirical newspaper The Onion, the source of article I referenced, you should give it a go. The Onion is quit possibly the finest export Wisconsin ever had surpassing its legendary cheeses.

But seriously, I see many higher ed professionals making policies regarding specific social media, when it changes as quickly as hairstyles and skirt lengths. How silly does a MySpace policy seem these days?

At press time, the number of users who enjoy Facebook had reportedly dropped to three.
I hadn’t realized it got even worse. I wonder which of the four stopped using FB.
